Rethinking American Autos
RAV4 recalls

HHR recalls from same site
http://www.mycarstats.com/auto_RECAL...HR_RECALLs.asp
Total complaints on RAV4 from 05-08 models 186, TSB's 38
Total complaints on HHR's from 05-08 models 187. TSB's 95
Granted, there was no official 05 HHR, but they do list one. This also does not cover the rest of the RAV4 before 05. Which add an additional 484 complaints and 165 TSB's. So hardly perfect.......

When tallying complaints you have to realize also people have higher expectations for Toyotas and are more likely to complain about lesser issues. The Toyotas Service Manager has a tougher job than a Chevy Service Manager in as far as Customer expectations.
Now price an Extended Warranty (which I never buy on any car) on a 2 year old Toyota with 50K on it and the same class GM car. Although tgoyota parts are more expensive the EW will cost far less. .......Wonder why?
The issue is perpetuated by the left leaning press and the elitist and superficial Consumer Reports / NPR mentality.
When GM recalls a half a million cars, it's front page news. When Toyota does the same thing, it's buried on page 3 of the Business section.
Did Detroit churn out some crap in the 80's. Of course they did, but they got their act together and then some. Unless the difference is overwhelming, I'm buying an American car. I'm willing to even buy "second best" to support American jobs. My job depends on American jobs. People around the world support their own domestic products, even when they're crap. Well, ours aren't crap, and if Consumer Reports gives an extra star for the Kia because the cupholder was more conveniently located, I'm still buying the Chevy.
We didn't win WWII building tanks at converted US Hyundai factories with steel imported from China.

I never said GM didn't have issue's. Granted there still dealing with the Dexcool issue, I had this problem on my Grand Am. Rather then Fix the problem they redesigned a new v6.
You complain about how much you dislike Gm and Toyota this and that, Yet you know all the issue's GM had/have and yet you buy a HHR. If you don't like it go buy a Toyota. You sound like a Dam Toyota Saleman anyway.
What Mistermike said it 100% True. If its GM,Ford,Chrysler its on the front page if its Toyota,Nissan your lucky to find it in the paper.
I get so sick of people basically *****ing about how GM is Crap compared to Toyota or any other company. Guess what i don't care go buy what the hell you want and don't complain about it. Yet you complain about GM making Crap. Yet you bought a HHR.

By the way if the interest of quality and recalls are so important...why does Toyota only show their reports as only North american. Did you know that the reports released from GM are for Worldwide performance. Toyota never includes reports of the their worldwide instances.
They fear for the reports to be less than what mainstream North America wants to hear.
And they have been hiding this for years and years. Just ask your magazine editors what kind of info they receive.
And they have been hiding this for years and years. Just ask your magazine editors what kind of info they receive. BS...IF GM actually turned the inon safety issues into recalls like Toyota does they would far surpass Toyota. Where are the recalls for the DEV-cool intake manifold issue? OH thats right. They are still in court. Toyota recalled vehicles well out of warranty with 100K+ miles on them for four model years to replace head gaskets "just because" I know I had one of them and was suprise when Toyota said they would fix the blown head gasket on my Tacoma that had 85K on it free and replace the other side as well. They then sent me a recall notice after I had it done as they did to every registered owner of the 3.0 6cyc for three or four model years regardless of warranty. Show me one instance of GM doing that? And you and I both know GM has had far more opportunity to do that. Plastic intake gaskets and DEVcool is a perfect example. They had to be sued to acknowledge an issue LOL
Where is the recall notice for jamming ignitions? Steering column issues? Both could be "safety" issues. Both are hardly unique. Instead they sweep issues under the rug and make one feel like their issue is unique.
Now look over a 10 year period In recent news and history news Toyota/Lexus has surpassed every single other auto-maker as the longest lasting vehicles with the fewest problems -Consumer Reports TEN year study Auto Issue 2008.
Just the facts....

The "jamming ignitions" and "steering column issues" are hardly a popular problem and neither pose an immediate driving safety hazard. The steering shaft noise is just noise. It doesn't mean you're going to lose your steering, you just hear a noise. GM doesn't need to issue a recall if the problem is intermittent and does not affect the safety or reliability of EVERY vehicle in the fleet. I don't think anyone has reported the steering or key issues that haven't been addressed under warranty or goodwill, either.
It's also not surprising that Consumer Reports rated Toyota the highest over 10 years. When that's what most of your surveyed subscribers purchase, I think the pool is going to be a little weighted towards Toyota.
You've already made up your mind about what team you're supporting and arguing with you about it isn't going to change anything. I think you're kind of a crappy American if you don't have the desire to support the home team over people who don't pay taxes and support the communities we live in. I don't think you see the big picture of the disappearance of the middle class or the effect the loss of our heavy industrial base will have on our standing in the global economy. You are a short-sighted, ignorant narcissist just like everyone else in my generation, and I am through debating these subjects with you.

Its not only Consumer reports its "common knowledge" Metrics are far better, more reliable. Except in Detroit or someone who is close to the US Auto Industry..
They refute that of course. Their livelihoods are at stake. How can they possibly agree. And the whole :they are better today argument went up in smoke when I had my Steering column replaced and the second set of rotors in less than 20K...Perhaps they have got better since 2006? LOL
Kingfrog....
Just wondering why you go to almost every thread that concerns foreign vs. domestic (or anything remotely related) to express your redundate opinion. I noticed you even 'dug up" older semi-dead threads to comment on. Isn't writing 3-4 paragraphs (usually well expressed, I will add) in one thread, stating your position enough??
I'm just wondering...not trying to start more debate. But I can't help but wonder what happened in your previous working life. Reviewing your posts gives one the impression you had some episode that made you very bitter.

I bought the HHR because it was cheap. Eight months old Loaded for $10k off list? The previous owner took a drubbing.Yeah ok I'll bite.......Its not the first mistake I have made. I have since bought a Toyota and my next car will be a Honda. I will never buy American again. WHY? Because I think the CEOS are piss poor managers and the UAW are extortionists. Why would I want to put more money in that money pit?

Pensioners drawing 50K a year plus benefits are doing nothing. I refuse to pay a premium for a car to support retired workers when I can pay a premium for a car where that money is actually put INTO the car while supporting and rewarding self motivated non union American Autoworkers right here at home as well. Win Win.. The whole patriotism thing is old.......I m supporting American workers buying products MADE by them in America. The UAW and American management can take a hike.
Design and engineering HAS to cut corners to build cars that compete with even more expensive cars to pay for all the benefits of unskilled labor. Let the Government take care of them. Thats what they voted for. They don't need my support. They have Washington now.
Well perhaps those workers should catch a clue and take hold of their own futures rather than allow extortionists to speak for them. I have no sympathy for sheeples who bite the hand that feeds them through a third party. They are just as culpable as management.
