Probably the rusty part. Or someone tried to tap into the pipeline illegally and blamed it on squirrels.
Rodents imperatively chew on stuff or their teeth get too long. If their dining doesn’t take enough off their teeth, they go to work on random … stuff.

Squirrels are destructive. One ate a little hole in the corner of our travel trailer.
The worst was when I had my '08 GMC Sierra. I parked it across the street from my house for 3 weeks one summer when I didn't need it. Went to start it, nope. Battery had a full charge, checked the ground cable (common issue on those) but I couldn't figure it out. Had it towed to a shop. They said a rodent had chewed the wires by the starter, fried out 2 relays for the ignition system, and 1 for the 4wd. $500 to get that all fixed.
