Shedding GM Chicklets not enough for one GM Brand
Shedding GM Chicklets not enough for one GM Brand
Awhile ago it was reported that GM would no longer place GM chicklets on it's remaining brands to distance their products from their bankruptcy but apparently that isn't enough for one of the GM Brands:
Cadillac distances itself from GM name. Luxury brand wants to distance itself from bankruptcy stigma.

Really? Do we believe that people won't remember that Cadillac is a division of GM? I've been in marketing for a lot of years, and I know that you can sway a lot of people to believe what you want them to believe ... but come on. Cadillac has been a part of GM since 1909.
I give them credit for trying, though.

This can potentially backfire. Regardless if Cadillac distances themselves from General Motors marketing, people will not separate them, just like they don't separate their left and right shoe. This may make some think that Cadillac has something to hide or give them the perception that there may be internal problems with the parent company. If that were the case, why would they purchase a Cadillac?
I'd buy a Cadillac regardless, but I think this is a shortsighted move for them.

Some may remember that Oldsmobile did sort of the same thing around 2000 when the Aurora 1st came out. There were no Olds logos and there were rumors that Aurora would become a new nameplate similar to Saturn.
We all know how it worked out for them....
That being said - looks like they're just trying to add a little schmaltz to their image. I don't think there's anyone who will think that they're not part of GM.
The bottom line is - whether people think they're a part of GM or not, if they actually build world class cars, people will believe that they actually build world class cars...
