Smoking Laws
Twenty-one years ago is when California started inforcing there no smoking law in restaurants, bars, and any other public building
..It was also when cigarettes went from ninety cents a pack to two-fifty
and I swore I would never pay more than a buck for them
Have not had one sense.......Still think about having a good cuban though

New York State went smokeless about 10 years ago. I used to smoke 3 packs a day and quit about 25 years ago. This'll bring up memories: remember when you used to wash the inside of your car windows and they were absolutely yellow with the smoke? It was a tough job to get it all off - after all, everyone smoked a ton back then. I know it's a fine line, but I'm glad they are banning it in public places.
I saw a older movie last week where Mel Gibson was smoking in the lobby of a hospital and there was a floor ashtray near a hallway door leading to one of the wards. Did that look strange for the moment. I noticed it right away.
i know I am biased since I don't, haven't, won't smoke, and after reading other peoples comments i am still going to go along with my earlier thought and ban it for good. One of my biggest pet peeves is that I live in an apartment, it's been warmer out, and we leave the windows open for some fresh air. Until a neighbor decides that they want to step outside for a smoke and it just all blows into our apartment. Luckily the chain smoking guy moved away, but the new guy still smokes too. If you don't want it in your house, why would I want it in mine.
i'm with eric on the asthma aspect of it was well. I don't have it personally but I have friends who do. His asthma is not effecting people's lives around him, so why should a smoker's life be able to affect his.

Smoking used to be glorified in the movies, advertisements etc.. You weren't cool with out a cig hanging out yer mug.
Well one of my favorite cowboys John Wayne, had 1 lung removed before he filmed "The Shootist" & of course he died from the Big C.
We don't allow it in our New home. When we were prepping the former Fla house to sell, every picture that was removed had the original color behind it..The walls that were exposed had turned from white to "nicotine off-white.. Nasty....

Fargo went smoke free in a 2 step process. First, you couldn't smoke in restaurants. Then you couldn't smoke anywhere. It bugged me since, at the time, I was a smoker and the non-smokers got 85% of the bars and restaurants to go smoke free, but that wasn't good enough... I figured if the non-smokers got to choose from 85% of the establishments, they'd be satisfied. Nope, they had to have 100%...
Doesn't really matter anymore, since I don't think these ordinances will ever be repealed. I'm a non-smoker now and I'm still against the full on bans for a few reasons:
1- cheritable gaming: many bars in fargo, and probably other places, have a few blackjack tables, pull tabs etc that support local charities. Since the smoking bans took place, quite a few of these little "casinos" have vanished due to lack of business. Local cherities (youth hockey, rehab centers, little league, etc) are suffering because of it.
2- general bar business: some of my favorite bars are dives. people who go to dives smoke, alot. some of my favorite bars are closed now because people stopped going to them after the smoking ban.
I guess I just can't wrap my head around the fact that 85% of eating/drinking establishments being smoke-free wasn't good enough for the non-smokers. Its a sacrifice for either group. Smokers can still go to a non-smoking establishment, but they have to get up, leave their drink, and go outside to smoke... no biggie. Non smokers can still go to smoking places and deal with the smoke. When did non-smokers' rights become more important?
even now, in their back-door way, the fargo PD is basically making it next to illegal to smoke outside the bars, especially downtown... Pretty soon it will be illegal to smoke in your own car unless it's parked on land that you own...

Ohio's had it for a couple years. Kind of a culture shock when we go to neighboring states and are asked in a restaurant "smoking or non-smoking?"
BTW when I smoked, I never did it indoors anyway, so one way or the other I wasn't inconvenienced.
