Soda, Pop, Or Something Else
here in kentucky you have 2 choices, coke or sweet tea, i was absolutely unprepared when i was up in the northern part of ohio once, asked for a tea and it came without sugar... blech... uncool, lol
down here its...
"you want coke or tea (automatically assumed that the tea will be sweet), what kind of coke you want?"

Man, I had sweet tea when I was in the south, a few years back. When they say sweet they mean SWEET. It's more like sugar water with caramel color added
Something you would feed to the hummingbirds !!

Once I was deep in the Ozarks at a small food joint and we asked what kind of soda they had and the girl said, "huh, only one kind I guess?" So we said," alright I guess we will take that. She proceeded to bring us seltzer water. We said , "no no coke or Pepsi? Then the waitress said, "oh you want a pop!
I've never heard anyone in St. Louis call it a pop. Must be a southern thingy!

we just always say soda unless ordering from a fast food place and then we say whatever its name is.. i also think that it depends on what your familuy calls it when you are growing up but i havent met anone on the east coast that says pop unless they are transplants..
"pop"
I was in Georgia MANY years ago...asked for a "pop"- the girl behind the counter kindly told me "my pop is at home" ... I was perplexed, until she said "ya'll have a fuuuuny ax-sent, where you fruuum?"
To this day, it's still "pop" for me...
