Where I live, a "pop" is a loud noise. Saying anything other than "soda" when asking for a soft drink will just get you a blank stare. We've traveled around the country a good bit and have learned to order a "coke" or "diet" where ever we go. That seems to be universal and understood easily enough so that we don't have to explain ourselves!

Believe me I know that it is POP! Yes, I am a compulsive Coca Cola collector. I own alot of old coke advertising. Maybe I'll show some of my collection if the moderaters say it's OK.

...so I'm down in the deep south and I ask for a Coke and the waitress says, "What kind of a Coke do you want....Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Sprite...what kind of a Coke?"

I said "Ginger Ale", and she brought me a beer. Go figure.

That's right. Coke means Dr. Pepper, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Sprite etc...and Ale is Beer. I thought everyone knew that. Although you won't find many Texans drinking Ale. It's either a beer or a Coke (see definition above). But lately the ladies have been drinking some kind of grape juice called wine???? Weird huh??
