Currently there are taxes added to each gallon of fuel. At least part of that is supposed to go to upkeep of roads. Electric cars don't get fuel, but still use the road, tax free. This tax will hit them as they will have to report their mileage some sort of way. I've heard it may be reported with the annual state registration, so each users registration bill would be based on the amount of miles they drove the previous year.

I'm not sure where "The Hill" gets their info from, but I think its just a few people trying to once again stir the pot. AFAIK, this was "floated" and killed 2 years ago.

The date on the article lead me to believe otherwise.

Here is another article on the same website published just hours later:

It seems that they are going back on what they just said...

My basic question is........

What are the doing with the $61,020,000 PER DAY (2009 figures) they are now getting from the federal tax on a gallon of gasoline.

Based strictly on my observations, it's not the federal gubament that needs road money - it's the states and municipalities. The U.S. interstate system seems (to me) to be in relatively good shape. State highways, those 2-lane roads that get you from one city or town to another are in sad shape.

Don't know if this proposal includes some 'trickle down' money for the 'little people'. I probably wouldn't support anything like this. I'm being taxed to death already. What's the average hit to one car going to be? How is the amount determined? I know big trucks have a lot more effect on highway road damage, but how much damage does a typical car do - 1/10th as much, 1/100th?

Yeah Krash, I see the point. But...

In my state, the gas tax is an additional 35 cents/gallon. So they get something already......to pay for their junkets and get fat.

And would interstate toll roads still collect revenue?

Seen the story when it came out....

It just further illustrates the flaws of our government representatives, way too many people with no common sense passing legislation without giving it any real consideration. Then again, you have to have hand it to them, they don't go too long without realizing one stupid idea they had is causing them to lose money, hence the need for another stupid idea to take more money.

If they want us to use less fuel, then of course, if we comply, their revenue from gas taxes is reduced. If more people also buy cars which don't use fuel, the same result occurs. So, why not tax those people who use no fuel for the mileage they drive and leave the rest of us alone? Why offer tax credits to buy these cars too? Seems like they're giving even more money away for a car which is not really anymore environmentally friendlier.... It's just replacing gasoline with coal for it's power. Simply another marketing scam to take your money and make you feel good about it!

Government makes more money on a gallon of gas than the oil companies do; what is government doing with all that money?
