Depends on what part of the USA you live in. In San Antonio a $75k house is the same as $500k in LA. Here in South Texas you can live in a large house on a ranch for $500k

Depends on what the housing market is doing in your area.

We paid $81K for a 3/2, small yard, pool, attached garage in a blue collar neighborhood in 1991, and it would fetch $325K now.
Which I find absolutely ridiculous, but that's what houses in this neighborhood are going for.

And before anyone suggests selling it while the market is hot, then you just have to buy another overpriced home to replace it. The housing market down here is nuts.

I agree about the unbelieveable prices on homes.

Built mine, as a custom, in 1980....cost was just about $80k with the acreage, value now is nearing the "big one" ....makes me feel like Bill Gates....and I would not spend that kind of money for a house.

Only thing is...our newspaper has a section that reveals luxury homes built or sold over the past week. I have a hard time understanding why 2 people would need a house with 6000-8000 square feet, selling for 1.5-3.5 mil. Well maybe on second thought, some men and woman want to live together but NOT live together...if you know what I mean.

I had to go with $750,000.00 if we are on housing. I figure my house which is almost 200 years old, small rooms, updated wiring, widnows, and recently added a new kitchen and expanded my bedroom (we can walk around in it now), on 1/8 acre is currently assessed for $345,000.00. Tax rate is low, but property values are quite high. We have a lot of homes not moving in the half mil range although many of the mil plus homes are selling like hotcakes.

In general, I think everything is overpriced. Hell, my first new truck was $3800.00 off the lot in 1977. That isn't even a down payment anymore.

Krazie, I understand why you would vote like that. California is a whole different ball game. There are houses that would go for $100,000 anywhere else in the country being sold for over a million every day here. I don't understand it but I am glad that we are on the good end of the deal. When we sell here and move back to GA in a few years it will be nice to have that big fat wad of cash.

Hate to show my age a bit, but I paid about $5,000.00 more for the HHR last year than I paid for a brand new 3 bedroom, 2 bath Ranch Style home here back in 1966. Now my "Ex" owns it! Sure brings a big 'ol tear to the eye!
