I've done pretty much the same, 1 credit card that is used only for reserving hotel rooms.

When I had to change jobs, and take a pay cut, I called my mortgage company and arranged a short sale since I could no longer afford my home.

After 6 months with no bids, the mortgage company signed over the deed. Seems it was going to cost more to take the house than to just write it off.

Haven't had a house payment in a year, however, I have a car payment since I took a loan out on the HHR in order to save my house from back taxes.
Gotta be Logical, even Moreso these days.

To many people are living for the Moment and Don't think Long Term. And living in Debt.

We had a class in High School that you had to take Econ 101 (Economics) Do kids still have to Pass it today?

"signed over the Deed"? The bank just wrote it off and let you Keep it?

Funny you mention "keeping up with the Joneses"....I married a "Jones". After we closed our construction loan and our 1-year waiting period was over, we quickly refinanced to get a VA loan. (We couldn't use a VA loan at closing since we built it ourselves and are not "VA Approved Builders". After a year, it isn't considered new anymore). Cut over a point off the rate...saving me about $600 a month. House, credit card, and car are all thru our credit union.

Yes. I had 13 years of on-time payments, and had contacted them before I got late on a payment.
