Blackout lights are VERY SMALL emission illumination for convoying vehicles. The lamps in the photos allow for JUST enough light to be visible with the naked eye for judging distance from directly in front of or behind a vehicle. With night vision illumination, those lights look much greater in luminosity and are therefore easier to pick up.

There is a blackout headlamp that is literally a full filamented dish lamp that is covered with an opaque shroud- with a quarter inch by 2 inch slit at 12 o'clock under ANOTHER shroud. This puts out the absolute least amount of light to pick up with NV so that the driver of the vehicle is able to navigate. The shrouds project the small beam directly at the ground with no dispersion anywhere else to be picked up by enemy troops.

This is the blackout headlamp. Under the cupped shroud at the top there is the small slit that puts out very little light. The hood over it stops light dispersion.

Essentially, BO lights allow for convoying vehicles to travel at night and maintain eachother's position without alerting the enemy to their whereabouts.
