What's Going on With Gas in the Middle of the US?

I took a trip to St Louis last week and had some serious issues with the gasoline purchased there.

The first leg of my trip, I got 28 mpg which was expected since I had about 100 miles of local driving. When I filled up in Mississippi, it went down slightly. On the trip home, I filled up in St Louis and Memphis. Both times I only got about 24 mpg. I was going the same speed but my rpms seemed to be higher. What would have caused that? Are they adding ethanol to all gas sold there? Is this caused by the so called "winter blend"? My last fill-up was in Andulusia AL. From there to the panhandle, I got 34 mpg. That's the best mileage I've ever gotten, especially on a full tank.

Is my DIC not working right? I'm headed to the dealer for regular maintenance this week. I might have them check it out.

The price of gas was much cheaper but I ended up using a lot more. It probably balanced out to the same cost in the end.

Very interesting...

Guess I should check my MPG more often...

Last time we took any type of road trip for any distance was when we drove to the HHRitage Nationals at the end of July in a 2006 2LT and we hit 31 mpg from St. Louis to Branson and 30 mpg back home. Ran with the cruise control set to 70 most of the time when we could.

We do have a Ethanol blend as kwboydston mentioned in Missouri.

I wonder if your HHR was more use to the blend in FL that it had trouble adjusting when you got here.

Maybe ChvyMngr can give us some insight on this...

I have been useing 10% ethanol here in nebraska and have done fairly well with it. sometimes pulling in 32-34 mpg hgy. but mostly around 29 to 30. But I do notice that regular does give better mpg since ethonal does burn hotter
