When I was a young kid many years ago, I "handled" something like that working for a landscape company. The base unit was 4 feet and each of the 2 wings were 3 feet and folded up and down for the same purpose as stated above. The big difference it was none riding.... but it was self propelled. I believe it was called a "Lock", but not sure.

Coincidently last evening bumped into the guy who runs out city’s landscape maintenance and he said they have two similar Toro machine, and recently retired one that lasted 30 years (with the help of some good mechanics.) Toro makes good stuff.
