Will Toyota make a play for GM

Could Renault and Nissan have a competitor in their effort to form an alliance with General Motors? Top executives at Toyota Motor are mulling their own overture to GM to head off rival Nissan from forging an alliance that could help the Japanese-French car company, according to people with knowledge of the Japanese auto maker's plans.

Thanks "D"....

Interesting article and confirms what I mentioned in a post a couple of months ago. I personally think Toyota is a better fit, because of the existing relationship.

Bryce...

A really interesting and accurate article.

Do you think GM had learned anything from that alliance??

If you mean the old alliance with Toyota...read the article, it really spells it out.

If you mean a new alliance with whoever, THAT IS the subject of their negotiation.

I think GM has learned some (look at modern Isuzu and their American pullout). But the fact that there's still some consideration makes me wonder. When I first saw the proposal, I immediately thought that Toyota was the better candidate; that an alliance with them might boost GM's waivering credibility with non-domestic buyers. BUT, is it worth it to do something so controversial? Granted, it's no merger. The Nissan-Renault deal just might be more easily digested only because Nissan doesn't stand out as Japanese nearly as bad as Toyota and Honda.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't (maybe).
