I got an estimate from a mechanic to replace both front and back brake pads + rotors + sensors, for a total of $1400. I know the place is relatively expensive, and I'm in a place (San Diego) where pretty much everything's pricey compared to most of the country, but am curious how much more this is than what you'd expect. Gonna check the price at a couple other places, but figured I'd get some online feedback as well.

What sensors are you referring to ? And why the need to replace those sensors ?

FYI. The HHR has disc brakes up front and drum brakes in the rear. So. Rotors and pads up front. Drums with brake shoes in the rear.
If you have a SS model , they have 4 wheel disc brakes.

Turns out there are no sensors -- that was just a generic thing in their automated system where I see the issues and decide if I want them to do the work. It's just the brakes + rotors, front and back.

 

I do my own repair work. Last brake job I did was complete front and rear brakes on my HHR SS. I put performance rotors and pads on. (my car has the larger Brenbo brake option)
Cost of parts was less than $400 w/tax.

 

Flat rate for R&R all 4 corners is 2.2 hours. GM parts is $270 for pads and shoes. They will likely want to replace the rotors and drums; GM rotors are $114 each, drums are $134 each.
I would get an estimate from an independent shop, that sounds like a tire or muffler store price. Jose on the corner can beat that.

 

If you need that basic work done do it yourself or take it to the local garage and have them do it.

 

I support guys. Pads and rotors need to be changed independently. This is a simple job that does not require qualifications. Rear drum brakes are a bit more complicated - but just watch a couple of videos and you will get a complete picture of the upcoming path + recommendations.
In any case, saving a few hundred dollars is a great incentive in our difficult times.

I think you will not be interested, I can only say that it is much cheaper than yours.

 

Some companies offer brake pad and rotors kits, not to expensive, you’ll need a 14 and 15 mm wrench, preferably 3/8 drive sockets . That’s for the fronts .
