Clutch replacement ??
Clutch replacement ??
My HHR LT 5 speed has 170 000 kms. My clutch is slipping. Has anyone here replaced their own clutch. What is involved? Videos? pics? Wondering if I should try this myself or take it in.
Thanks

If you do not have a lift and the ablity to remove a transaxle I would suggest you let someone with the proper tools do it for you.
Changing a clutch in a FWD in the a easy task for the guy at home anymore.
It takes the proper tools and a above average skills. I will let you decide it you have enough of either.
Note I have seen clutches changes with the transaxle in and it is not easy to do on most vehicles if it even can be done. Space limits much of what can or can not be done.

Have it done by somebody and expect it to run around $800, this isn't a DIY job unless you have a fully equipped shop with a lift. Things are tightly packed in these HHR's as with any other FWD vehicle, it makes doing the clutch a real bugger.
I wouldn't go that far...
It can be done. But if the op is asking a forum, it would probably be best to take it somewhere.
At minimum, the subframe and transmission need to come out while the engine is supported by a hoist. The flywheel should be resurfaced/replaced as well.

For most this is not a home job.
Many GM's have gone to an expecation of dropping out the K - Frame/Member while the engine/trans is supported from above. I helped a buddy remove a 99 Grand Prix Trans and it was not a fun job but doable.
He happend to be working for a Chevy Dealership at the time and had access to all the equipment and tools....
Hell, doing plugs and wires on my 2000 Buick Century 3100 Series 3.1L v6 was a nightmare for the back 3 plugs as the wires all seized up on the plugs. Having access from the bottom and top was needed.
I still manage to get work done on my 4th gen cars on the ground but its getting tougher as I get older, thats for sure.
As for the Job pay a shop to do it, start searching for a good street clutch, meaning it holds better power but can be slipped. IMO just get a flywheel that comes with the kit. You can cut most stock FW once, but even then, they tend to warp quicker next time around.

Thanks for the input. Although I'm sure I could do it, as I get older I find I dislike working on big items like this. I was hoping for some pics to see what I would be in for. I do have a hoist and tools. Just lacking ambition.

Don't feel bad man, in my 20's an engine swap was a two hour and four beer deal, in my 30's it was four hours and two beers, now in my 40's I write the guy a check to do it and have a glass of wine. Age changes everything eventually, like your arms not being long enough to read a menu without reading glasses, you notice everybody is whispering for some reason, and when you smile back at a young girl you do the mental math and think "she could be my daughter".
OP....you may wish to review this thread just posted by another member. It's for a "pulled" 5 speed tranny, but the pictures are great review.

Notice the engine is held from above. Also notice miscellaneous parts on the floor.
