Welcome back hurst2001- Not oldblue (obviously) , but I'll throw in my .02 fwiw, if you plan on keeping the ride, do it right & replace the bad metal. You will be much happier.
Grinding down the rust & glassing it in is only a temp fix, the problem will re-appear in the future.

Mine had rust bubbles in the same spot. I sanded it down and the metal was still good. Hit it with some etching primer, sandable primer then the colour. The colour doesn't match worth a damn. I've never had luck getting any touch up paint to match. The only place I can get it is at the local NAPA but it's always been too dark. I told the guy to lighten it a bit and now it's too light...lol. Still looks better than a rust bubble though.

From the years of dealing with rust, I learned one thing. Once it starts it always wins. I use a lot of fluid film, especially in the winter time, to prevent it from starting. That makes it very,very messy to work underneath. But I'd rather deal with dirt and grease, than rust.

X2^^^^^^^, you can wash off the fluid film, not the rust!!
I fixed a rust spot on the liftgate four years ago in a similar procedure, I spot sand blasted the rust , then Eastwood’s rust converter then primer then Duplicolor colour and then clear coat, the is back !! Already!

Hello,
Great job on this repair! Where did you get the patch panel for this repair, or did you make it yourself? I have the exact same problem, but only on one side, Thanks to the Virginia DOT salt brine they put down for no reason. 2007 HHR 1LT, 243,000 miles and counting...
