Clean it when it looks dirty. Different roads will make all the differance in the world on how fast a filter gets dirty.

That makes sense, what do I use to clean it with? Soap and water? Can you buy replacement filters still for these?

Exclamation

Stock filter or aftermarket? Paper , foam, or cotton? If it's a paper filter, it goes in the garbage. If it's a foam or cotton mesh, clean it with a good detergent and rinse, rinse, RINSE! And if it is washable DO NOT spray anything on it! That is asking for a failed MAS. If you must do more to it, get a used pair of panty hose and make a "sock" for it. (same thing as a fancy pre-filter)

Cleaning Filter

As I said, clean it (in the sink works) with a detergent, soaking is good also. Then rinse, rinse, and rinse again.(don't forget to let it dry in the sun, or blow it out good with an air hose. NEVER use a heat gun) When you put it back, DO NOT spray any light weight oil, silicon, or anything else on it. This can contaminate the MAS and those are not cheap!. I've got a K & N kit, and I cut a "sock" from the foot of a pair of my wife's discarded pantyhose. You would be suprised how much dirt this catches. So much that I only have to clean the filter about once a year! Just my two cents. Happy Motoring.
