Oil
Why are people so afraid of change? Old scholl oil intervals are....old school. Do you really think a major car builder/manufacturer or oil producer would recommend an extended oil change if it weren't safe? . So it must be true then, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Ive run 26,000 on one oil change..generally run 8 to 12 k on my non DIC vehicles..based on oil color , smell, time and milages.Guess what, no problems.........
I think what most are comparing to are the owners that never change the oil(dino oil ) and the motor gets sludged up, dino oil needs a different chg routine, but will stilll handle up to 8 k depending upon usage.(or abuse).
Ive had vehicles that burned oil that the added oil constituted the oil change interval, just made sure the filter was changed often eoungh and those vehicles lasted quite a long time despite the know oil usage. Just follow the auto/oil manufacturers advice and don't worry about what you used to know,......Ozzie and Harriet passed away along time ago....

PS Ricky did too.
My dad has owned my truck since 1994, and he rebuilt the engine (which is from 1972) in 1995. That engine is spotless on the inside, and he has changed the oil every 4,000 miles regularly with Penzoil 10w30. Sure it might be excessive changing, but after almost 15 years and 100,000 miles the engine still looks new.
Same thing goes with my Lumina. The co-worker I bought it from bought it in 2000, when it was 1 year old. She had the oil changed every 3,000 miles and I have the receipts to prove it. Again, the engine on that car looks brand new. When I had the head gasket fixed, I was told by the worker that he has never seen an engine that age, that clean.
While yes, changing oil frequently may cost more and may be bad for the environment, it sure as hell doesn't hurt your engine. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
If cost is not a consideration then go for it...its just brought up because it was said years ago the change intervals were short,,,back when oils were not as good and metalergy was not as refined freqent oil changeswere a necessity... that no longer holds true. Now a days theres no reason to run dino oils except for costs, they just don't add up to synthetics. Alot of 'shops" still push 3k changes because that may be their main cash crop. Sure the 3k changes worked back then and they work now,, but your throwing good money away. Not everyone has that luxury..
Ive run several vehicles in the high 200k milage with no problems with extended oil changes, I don't see the problem....unless you ascared...oh, Ive seen abused vehicles make over 200k also so ...................to each their own

I've been using Mobile 1 ''Extended Range'' fully synthetic 5w30 [ 15k oil ] and I ALLWAYS change it when the DIC gets to 20%..Thats usually about every 6-7k for me.
The ''Extended Range'' Mobile 1, is only four dollars more per 5 qts at Walmart vs their regular Mobile 1 fully synthetic,so I use it.

One question i have, how long should i wait before changing my oil in my 09 hhr ls. As I drive mainly highway miles (430km's daily) ive driven nearly 10,000 kms and the DIC reports oil to be 64% still. Any suggestions?
Hwy miles are always easier on a motor..your at a mostly steady state operation without alot of load variations...its the starting and stopping, short trips.. the not quite warmed up motor thats shut off that kills oil..if the oil cannnot reach operating temp its not doing its job and collects moisture fuel and whatnot. Just how much load is on a vehicle on cruise going 65? Your probably using under 100hp on a flat road...maybe less...and most od that is for wind resistance. Run it like the DIC says...after it gets below say 15-20% THEN consider changing it...it wouldn't be recommended by the builder if it wasn't safe...its their dime if it fails!
Thats kind of what i was thinking too. It just goes against everything I've been taught about maintenance ie:5,000km changes. At this rate, my first change could be around the 20,000km mark, which I should be at within the next 5 weeks or so.
