Seems like I touched a nerve, there was no rant or put downs,, just stating the obvious....alot of people are still old school and refuse to leave it. And you took offense because, well, it applies to you? nO Problem. I say alot of what I say to actually target those that DON'T know or have no experience with some things. This jusy gives them things to think about....who should I follow....this guy says I HAVE to do it this way and this other guy over here says I dont. It also forces you to rethink past habits....people get stuck on old info and sometimes it takes a kick in the shins to wake em up.Its totally up tp the individual what/how they their maintenance schedules. Keep this in mind when somebody asks a question because theyve never had to deal with it before. Alot of people are on budgets and can't afford to be doing oil every 3 to 5 and may not be able to do it themselves for one reason or another( such as apartment complexes that allows NO maintence to be performed on property). These are the ones that benefit from the info I ve stated.I always try to speak in general terms to appease both sides of the house...Ive been in both! Enjoy.....

Not sure who you are posting to, but no nerves twitching here. I'm not posting that this thread is out of control, just that I don't want it to get there. Peace and ride on.

I change my oil over my fish tank so i can re-create the BP disaster...!!

This site was made by people who have differing opinions-that's what makes it great. As long as we can shake hands during and after a thread everyone is happy whether someone converted to someone elses way of thinking or not.

Why not relax and join us daring to be different in the Questions with a Question thread to see if you can out question harlysshhr (or even me) and you'll soon be soooo confused you'll forget what you just had for Dinner! Isn't that right BATMAN...

So I didn't read this whole thread but I have a ? about oil change.
I am running Amsoil 0w30 Sig Series and wix filter and just for fun I sent a sample in to be analyzed. 2 times now the oil has come back with dangerous amounts of fuel in it????. 3-4% fuel dilution.
The first time it had almost 10k on it and 2nd time 7.5k.
Is this normal for a turbo engine running 20sum psi of boost?? I really don't Know who to ask.

One service writer says he asked a tech and said there was nothing to do about it??

Just wondering if I should follow up on this or just waste $50 in oil every 3-5k mi?
Anyone heard of this or sent samples in?

Questions regarding the analysis.......

Did your lab report provide descriptive analysis? What did it say? Did it display a comparative target number?

How did you capture the sample? Was the engine hot.....and I mean hot, not just at operating temperature (it does take a considerable time get the oil to an operating temperature.....as compared to your engine coolant). Did you run the car for, oh let's say, an hour or so thru stop and go traffic, the freeway? Was the engine cold?

If the engine was cold, you started it and moved to a location to change it, then drained and captured the sample, you probably had raw fuel from the start-up caused by the DI. This also happens with regular injected vehicles as well. But generally to a lessor reading. This is ok, but should have been noted when you sent the sample in for analysis. The lab can make a valid judgment then.

Final question......who did the analysis.......Amsoil, Blackstone, etc.?

However, if this is a constant reading, I would change oil more frequently. You are diluting the lubricating properties of the oil. Your "metal" readings should provide some evidence of this.

Can you post a copy of the analysis? I'm not an expert but have "played" in the oil and analysis field for some time.

Okay, I'm definitely not understanding alot that's going on in this or any of these other oil change threads. I do not get at all why people decide to arbitrarily pick some % shown on a computer display or some random mileage number that dates back to 40 yr old or more technology to decide when their oil needs to or should be changed.

Why do you (whoever you are) feel the need to change your oil at 50%, 25%, 15% etc intervals? Isn't that what GM designed the 0%/ "change oil now" number to calculate for? I would think that within that 0% calculation would be a pretty significant tolerance to safeguard them and cover warranty claims. There should not be any benefit whatsoever before changing your oil before something like say 5% unless you like throwing money away.

Just for fun, lets assume $25 per regular dino oil change. We all drive 100k miles. Driver A does oil changes every 3k, he does 33 oil changes at $825. Driver B does oil changes every 5k, so 20 at $500. Driver C keeps to his DIC and changes the oil about every 9k as I have been since day one - oil changes cost $275. Yeah, it's only $550 over 100k, but that's still about $55/ 10k to cover yourself against what? the factory warranty??

Also, just some more food for thought... If you could go shop anywhere (groceries, auto parts, etc) today and pay full price, or go shop tomorrow and get the exact same items/performance/etc at half price, when would you shop? Pretty sure it'd be tomorrow - so why go change your oil early today at 3k or 4k when you can wait til 8k or more per the car's computer? Flame away =)
