3 salesmen book into a hotel for the night, and the clerk says that will be $45 - so each salesmen chips in $15 to split it 3 ways. For a total of? yup - $45. and they head off to their room.

Later the clerk realizes he overcharged them - the room should have been only $40, so he gives the bellhop 5 one dollar bills and tells him to give them back their change. On the way to the room, the bellhop thinks - how can 3 guys split $5 easily, so he pockets $2 just to make it easy for them.

He gets to the room and he gives the salesmen the 3 one dollar bills with the clerks apology.

So, the salesmen originally paid $15 each, they each got $1 back - meaning they paid $14 right?

$14 x 3 = $42!!

$42 + the $2 the bellhop pocketed = $44!!!

Where did the other dollar go out of the $45 they originally paid?

(so is the real Answer to the Ultimate Question - 42, or 44 or 45?, or is it "1"? - perplexion abounds!!)
I know that one! You need to ignore the irrelevant information:
$14 x 3 = $42, while accurate math, isn't relevant to the question, nor is the $42 + 2 = $44. The 3 men gave the hotel $45. The hotel gave $5 to the bellboy, who kept $2 and gave the men $3. So, the hotel had $40, the bellboy had $2 and each of the 3 men got back $1 or a total of $3 to the men so: $40 (hotel) + $2 (bellboy) + $3 (men) = $45.

Oh you take all the fun out of it!! It's fun to run by a young kid, especially when you explain the missing $ with:

A week later TWO of the salesmen return to the same hotel, and get a $30 room (it's a little smaller) so they each kick in $15. Later the clerk realizes they overpaid by $5, so gives the bellhop $5 to return to them. Of course the bellhop realizes two men can't split $5 easily, so pockets $3 and returns only $2.

So the men each paid $15 originally, got $1 back, meaning they each paid $14 out of pocket. $14 x 2 = $28. $28 + $3 the bellhop has = $31. That is where the other $ went.

Those guys need to pick a new hotel. Clerk can't figure out how much a room costs. Bellboy "keeps the change"......

$25 + $2 + $3 = $30.......

While this may be true, you have no way to prove it.

I, for one, have an oil analysis done on EVERY oil change I do. In the analysis, among other "things", is a value provided for INSOLUBLES...which essentially is how well a filter is doing in removing the "particulates" from the oil. I have never had a value reading of over .1%, which is SIX times BETTER than the generally recognized "failure" value of .6%. AND I generally have more than 5000 miles on an oil and filter change. Thus demonstrating that your statement is not applicable in many, if not most, instances. I use OEM filters.

On your #1 statement....

I have wondered for more than several years, what is the great worth to a "blend" synthetic/fossil oil. Only because there is no "legislative" requirement of the percentage of synthetic vs. fossil oil, when using the term "BLEND". So, are purchasers of the blends getting 10%, 20%, 50% or whatever. There is a price difference between the different blends, but this does not always offer a valid reason.

Owners/users can only hope GM has done their homework and has provided for the necessary amount of synthetic to prevent the premature (or what GM feels is unexceptable) wear that had been encountered in some of GM's vehicles that use fossil oils.

I think in the case of the " Saab ecotech" engine the actual function is tolerances. The design & engineering is much different from the "old iron horsepower" design. Mostly the weight of the oil needs to be design spec; The computer does not really sample the oil, unless they snuck something in there that is not in the "GM Parts" book.
