Should I switch to Full Synthetic

I have an 07 HHR LT 2.4L with 114,500 miles on it and currently when I get an oil change they use a synthetic blend.

Should I change to Full Synthetic? Are there any advantages to using full synthetic like more milage between oil changes or it is just better to use since I have 114k on the car.

Any help would be appecaiated.

LOL ya got that right!!

The original poster needs to use the Search function as this hAs been discussed to death.

My only comment is I have gone back to reg oil after going to synthetic at high mileage and finding that my oil consumption went WAY up on synthetic.

Whopper- how much oil does your HHR use? At 75k miles, and ??? oil changes (I altered my oil change interval, and lost track), I've never seen any leaks drips or even had to add any oil between changes. Frankly, the Ecotec seems to not use any oil. Same on my wife's Cobalt (32k). Of course, now at 75k I'm expecting that to change, but not by much. I've always had oil-miserly GM engines; even after 250k, before being T-boned by a Ford Exploder, my 18 year old 2.8L S-10 (V-6) only used (or dripped) less than a 1/3 quart per 5000 miles (oil change interval, using Castrol Syntec-later Royal Purple 20-50w).

I think it was at about the 60/70,000 mile mark I switched to Full Synthetic. Up until that point it used just a hint of oil between changes (a lot less than a 1/4 litre) - and I typically ran the oil life down to 20-40%.

I didn't really keep track of the mileage - but guess it would be ~8,000 miles or so between changes (mostly Highway miles).

It ate a quart and a half of synthetic in less than 3000 miles!!! I was quite shocked when it barely showed on the dipstick. No leaks and no drips - it is very oiltight, and no smoke out the pipe.

So back to conventional oil for the car. The oil consumption was about a quart over the life of that first change-back oil, and subsequent usage is dropping back to almost normal. The car now has ~115,000 miles, and uses maybe 1/2 quart over the life of an oil change.

Naw............ oil NEVER wears out - it is a consumable just like gasoline. Do you ever change your gas? Nope!!! (mind you someone here will argue the need to change the gas in the tank depending on the phase of the moon I bet )

Being that oil and gasoline are both consumables - oil changes are just something the OIL companies promote to line their own pockets.

Just run it till the dipstick no longer shows any oil on it, then add JUST enough to bring it up to the FULL mark, but no more. Overfilling can cause hydraulic lock of the sphyncter valve, leading to catastophic failure of the kneurben joint - and that can get expensive, as I am sure you are already well aware.

Drive and monitor the oil level and add as necessary - just lather, rinse, repeat!!!

(all spelling and grammar errers are intentionale)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it..

Switching to full syn will not prolong the DIC OLM readings.

I'd suggest sticking with what ya been using..
