Small O ring in Oil Filter

As far as I understand the small o-ring makes a seal on that end of the filter for proper routing of the oil flow, if its missing the oil can bypass the filter. I'm sure someone has delved deeply into the Ecotec oiling system and can give an exact why and wherefore, but for now the simplest answer is that it needs to be there.

As as been posted by many already the small o-ring has to seal off incoming oil, so the oil gets filtered.

Neighbors already know iam NUTS so seeing me out at 2am with parts off a new car and the hood up no one thought a thing about it ! Just the nut across the street . Same guy that details his cars all the time and blows them dry with a gas blower . I really could not sleep until I knew forsure it was on that damn filter

Ya I agree and it must need to be there or GM would not spend the 1 penny or less they cost on OEM filter

The small O-ring has to be a seal to get oil filtered, only 2 passages in there "in & out", & without going thru the filter is not good.
