stupid question
I changed mine at around 22k (car was bought used with 19k) and I'm pretty sure it was the original filter I took out of there......
It really wan't "that bad" considering. The intake design is pretty good at keeping the majority of the dirt out, being from inside the enclosed fender well and the "wooly worm" intake tube catches big stuff. Good idea to remove that and blow it out when you change filters.
I've since changed intakes to the GMPP so it's now 4 screws and the filter element is lifetime. Performs better too.

I changed mine around 45k miles. It really wasn't that dirty, the woolly worm tube was though. Just blew it out with an air compressor. The filter was cheap, so I figured since I had it off I'd replace it.
Thanks for the link, n ur right, no common sense in the design. I already had to replace a head light, I never seen a worse design....except for maybe the air filter now! And I just chased down the correct socket for the oil filter, I worry bout what's next. Nothing simple on this car.
Now that was great German engineering!

How dare you question zee superior German engineering? Its not just the German's who have interesting design issues, they just revel in making things interesting. I'm waiting to see how the new FIAT's are built and how 'mericun techs deal with Italian cars after a generation without them.
What year was that? I have a friend at work that just bought a '01 or '02...
air intake
I went with the stock and installed K&N, then installed a CGS, then cut and weldwe the CGS and added an Edelbrok 10 inch round filter added a UNI foam filter over the paper filter may get the K&N 10 inch by 2 inchfilter photos in the Toms Farm g2g las Nov. page 31 big change in horse power and MPG.
It was an 01. Make sure your freind finds a service record showing that belt has been changed. If it breakes, it bends all the valves and cost big bucks to have fixed. I got the car at a resonable price because the owner didn't want to spend a couple of grand to do routine maintenance.
