I changed mine at around 22k (car was bought used with 19k) and I'm pretty sure it was the original filter I took out of there...... It really wan't "that bad" considering. The intake design is pretty good at keeping the majority of the dirt out, being from inside the enclosed fender well and the "wooly worm" intake tube catches big stuff. Good idea to remove that and blow it out when you change filters.

I've since changed intakes to the GMPP so it's now 4 screws and the filter element is lifetime. Performs better too.

I spray silicone on the grommets before I remove it.

I changed mine around 45k miles. It really wasn't that dirty, the woolly worm tube was though. Just blew it out with an air compressor. The filter was cheap, so I figured since I had it off I'd replace it.

Bully, you have no idea of BAD a design can be! I had a VW Passat that required a mandatory timing belt change at 75K. To access the belt you had to remove the entire front end of the car!!
Now that was great German engineering!

How dare you question zee superior German engineering? Its not just the German's who have interesting design issues, they just revel in making things interesting. I'm waiting to see how the new FIAT's are built and how 'mericun techs deal with Italian cars after a generation without them.

Air Filter

Do yourself a great big favor and save up for a K&N. You don't change the filter, you wash it. Check out these pics. Remember All of K&N products come un-painted.

Eric, sorry for the slow response, I havn't been on in a while..
It was an 01. Make sure your freind finds a service record showing that belt has been changed. If it breakes, it bends all the valves and cost big bucks to have fixed. I got the car at a resonable price because the owner didn't want to spend a couple of grand to do routine maintenance.
