Switching to synthetic oil.
i used to run Royal Purple 5W30 in my Camaro, and a good friend of mine convinced me to switch to AmsOil (he is a dealer). i noticed a remarkable inprovement in drivability, she seems to rev more freely now, and i have picked up about 2 mpg in town and on highway. not saying RP is a bad oil, i absolutely loved it, but the AmsOil is a better oil. i've had the same batch in there for almost a year, bought a case of it last year to make the change, and still have plenty to do my change this year, which i'll be doing soon. once i use the rest of what i have (the signature series oil aka SSO wasn't released yet when i amde the switch) i will be going to the SSO in it. also, i made use of my free first oil change through my dealership in my HHR, and come time for the next oil change, i'll be hitting up my buddy again for AmsOil to go in there too. the only thing i don't have that won't be getting AmsOil any time soon is my truck, because i don't drive it often at all and will be replacing the motor that is in there right now. i just need that motor to last long enough to get me through school. which it really won't get many miles between now and then. it gets Castrol GTX for now. but after i get a new engine, it'll be a higher performance engine, and i'll care about it more, so it will get AmsOil at that point, too.
Pennzoil/Quaker State are no longer "companies", but merely a brand name under SOPUS (Shell). Makes one wonder what the actual differences are other than marketing. (Not to say they're not good!)
Similar to the situation in the U.S. tire industry.... Most of the past brands are history and merely a brand name still marketed by a foreign company.
Confusing, huh??

I have read this thread and I am still a bit confused. I have an 06 with 137k miles. I bought the car in October and now the DIC is telling me I need to change the oil. I bought the car from a used car lot so I have no idea what type of oil has been used. A lot of owners on this forum recommend that I use synthetic. I have been considering using oil that is formulated for high mileage cars. Any thoughts or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
More then you ever wanted to know about oil! :)
IMO changing the oil on time is the best maintance is the key. Dino oil vs synthetic,Synthetic oil in the long road holds up better!Less foaming, Better thermal break down,( IE: Doesnt brak down like dino oil) Helps coat the parts with a lite film helping the car on start up.
80%or is on the start up (read that somewhere) Cyl walls are dry after sitting ,the oil drains back to the oil pan. Synthetic oil also has less carbon build up.you will notice that on the 2nd or 3rd oil change, It is a all round better oil. BUT A good grade dino based oil is also good, changing it is the key.. Is it worth the extra $$$? I think so,a few $$$ more to protect the car or MC heck yea I think it is. I use Mobile 1 in my all my cars and Motorcycles...
High milage oil? They add some products that help ! From what I read it may be worth it as well
Synthetic oil may show signs of usage in a older engine. Not burning it just that it is slicker and slips out through the worn parts, Not burned!
DO what make you feel good and show less usage, change it on time and check it weekly :)
CONGRATS on the new ride!
Oil class 101 is now over! :)

ALSO change your cabin air filter, you can find them on E Bay or local, Also check your Air Filter, bet the dealer dint cchange them !

Yea there are many write ups on it. The Mobile web site has one as do the other brands! But they are the makers :) I researched the independent sites. Tons of good info showing the break down of Dino based oil and synthetic! I had them booked marked on my old PC Ill see if I can find them. We had the same debate on my motorcycle forums lol... But if you ever try synthetic look at the oil color of the dino oil when you drain it! if your anal like me :) save alittle. Put in synthetic your brand of choice. When time to change it bring your saved jar of the dino oil. Compare the 2, First you will see alittle difference. save a sample of the first synthetic sample. repeat each change 1 or 2 more times. At each change you will see that the synthetic is cleaner then the last till all the sludge is basicly gone.. The way synthetic is made it doesnt burn like dino oil so there for less carbon build up. If you keep the samples awhile you will sometime see the sediment on the bottom of sample jar, less each sample. I work in the HVAC trade and we take oil samples on the AC unit after a burn out compressor. On our fleet trucks we take samples and send them out for testing..
Oil class 102 over :)
To me the cost difference is worth it on the investment of my cars and Motorcycles......Will a car last longer with synthetic?
And Yes I am a windbag in person too lol

i get the snythetic vs conventional debate...but i mean synthetic brands alone...everybody on here pushes Mobil..why? whats the difference between mobile syn and castol syn or quakerstate or watever else...isnt a synthetic a synthetic? change it every 6000kms or so and u will be fine. Just this company debate seems to never end, thats what im trying to get to the bottom of
For what it's worth, I tried synthetic oil (can't remember the mileage nor the brand but it was when the car had maybe 60,000 miles or maybe a bit more). I have since gone back to regular oil, as the car drank that synthetic like it was a fine wine. It didn't leak it at all, but used over a quart of synthetic in probably less than 2-3000 miles. And I never noticed any smoke out the exhaust, so where it went I have no idea.
Prior to the synthetic it used maybe a quarter inch on the dipstick over 4-5000 miles. It took 2 conventional oil changes for the oil consumption to get back to normal.

I've been following the DIC oil monitor on my 06 since new and have been using synthetic oil, usually M1 @ $24-29/5 quart jug at Wally World. The DIC has told me I can run at least 10,000 miles before the DIC gets down to 10%. But I also do a lot of highway miles.
