Noooo, that muffler is pitiful….
It's NOT a free flowing muffler.
It's just another dumb, quiet, muffler.
The exhaust flows into the muffler, then it has to turn around, & find the small opening, into the tubing, exiting the muffler.
This is how to make a muffler, that is really quiet,
& this is the best way to choke power, at all RPM levels above idle...
It's like the exhaust gets inside the muffler, gets lost, looks at a map, uses GPS, or as my wife would say,
just ask someone if you're lost, for directions, if you don't know your way out of this muffler..
Or another analogy would be like, when your're in an airplane, looking out the window, & the airport is below you, but the plane just keeps on going, it seems like miles, to make a huge turn, to come back to the airport, that you just passed, 10 minutes ago...

wow, that's terrible. Looks like I'd have to have an SS muffler to even begin thinking about doing this.
Looks like I'm just going to buy an aftermarket product if I want a better sound, there's nothing there to work with on the stocker.

I think I've narrowed my exhaust search down to the following. I purchased a used SS muffler earlier this year and have been trying to purchase a complete full SS stock catback for my 2.2. But, come to find that shipping a complete SS catback is ridiculously high! I do not want to spend $600+ on an aftermarket kit that may or may not make my hhr obnoxious.
What I have come up with is I am going to be leaving the stock cat-back on and replacing the muffler with the SS muffler I already have and then ordering the ZZP mid-length header/dp combo. I then want to move the stock resonator further down the exhaust system towards the rear of the car and install a 1320 electric exhaust cutout right after the dp. That way I can get a completely free flowing exhaust setup I want without completely sacrificing the quietness of the stock exhaust. For daily use I can have the dump closed and when I want to open up the exhaust I can flip the switch on the dump when needed.
This video is what gave me the idea. Skip to the 12:00 minute mark for the driving portion of the video.
Anyone suggestions before I start buying parts?

I've been playing with exhuast combos for a few years now, I have the 2.2 , tried Magnaflow and others, I ended up with simply a larger and longer resonater from Walker and an SS muffler also from Walker, much less then the Borla system made for GM and not noisy like those straight thru mufflers
HHR '06-'11 2.2/2.4L 4 CYL AT/ part # 19158628
I went with this Walker system
Exhaust Resonator AND Pipe Assembly Walker 56248 Fits 06 11 Chevrolet HHR | eBay
And
Exhaust Muffler Assembly Quiet Flow SS Muffler Assembly Fits 06 11 Chevrolet HHR | eBay
And saved some cash!
The pipes are 2 1/4 inch , the stock system is just 1 3/4 inch but my dp is 2 1/4.
I couldn't find a 2 1/4 cutout but I did find a 3 inch and a 2 inch, here's the 3 inch

The stock HHR SS exhaust system is a 100% true straight thru 2.5" SS system, that is very well designed, very quiet, very free flowing.
It can easy handle well over 300 HP.
A straight thru system isn't noisy, when well designed, as GM has done very well...
By the way, the HHR Borla system is on closeout, & is well worth it, as it is all 304 SS:

On ebay, thru Borla, for $320 , or best offer, a great deal:

I made them an offer but the do not ship to Canada, the Walker muffler is for the SS.
works out to $180.00 CDN as to the GM Borla system $435.00 CDN
It only a 2.2 so a 1/4 inch on the ID isn't much and I doubt I'll ever see 300HP.
I wanted to open up the exhaust to compliment the K&N FIPK set up I got from Hib Halverson last month

Thanks guys. I looked at the borla close out deal and had decided against it. I would much rather have the stock SS exhaust since I know they flow very well and can support up to 300hp which I doubt I'll ever see from the stock 2.2. Plus the SS exhaust is super quiet which is what I am looking for on a daily basis. I do have a stock SS muffler that I'm looking to install and leave the factory catback in place. I think the electric dump might be the cheapest route for what I'm looking for while remaining quiet for daily use.
