Exhaust Picture

I'm curious if anyone has cracked open a stock exhaust muffler and looked at the internal structure of the piping?

I have been searching for the past couple days and haven't found anything conclusive. I don't have a boroscope or camera of any kind to look down the muffler and curious to what I'll find when I cut it open; looking into modding it with little to no money involved.

I'm a skilled welder and have plenty of SS MIG wire to re-seal. Plan is to cut open and wrap internal piping with header wrap (done it before, gives it a lower tone and slightly louder) and possibly re-packing new fiberglass depending on condition when I find it.

Welcome to the site.

Not a cut open view, but this shows that the stock SS muffler is a straight-thru design.

looking for 2.2L but I assume a 2.4L would be the same? No?

This is what I did on my BMW, looking to do it on my cousins HHR and don't want any surprises because once you go down this road you're committed haha

Straight through design is what I'm looking for as the project becomes just sealing off the perforations of the interior piping. Gives it a very soft straight pipe sound and you can re-pack the muffler to change the tone. I'd post a video of mine but a straight 6 and a 4 banger aren't that close to be able to tell a comparison I feel

The stock systems are actually quite free flowing, and somewhere I did see a Cobalt muffler cut open, but I can't find the images anywhere...so they may have been taken down.

Basically the stock rear boxes are mildly baffled(2.2 & 2.4), or straight through on the 2.0 LNF's as noted by George.

Most of us who run GMPP/Borla or Magnaflow systems, are looking for the throaty sound, without expecting(or getting) a quantifiable boost in performance.

A great way to "Wake Up" your HHR is with a performance tune. Do a search here for "Trifecta Tune", and read up on it.

Yes this would be for sounds purposes also. Trifecta Tune would be great down the line but not quite right at the moment.

I believe way back, when owners started to look for mufflers to change, former member JoeR opened a muffler from a 2.4 to prove how efficient they perform. I think it was in 2006-7.

The picture MAY be still available from the Search function.....if you want to spend some time.

You're exactly right Snoopy, great memory as always!

Here's JoeR's image, with thanks to him for sectioning a stock 2.4 muffler.
