Dash Help

I'm trying to mount my stop light prism. Removing the little storage box and drilling the hole aren't a problem, but I can't get my fingers under the dash on the left side of the removed box area to install the screw on the prism. Does anyone have any experience in loosening up the dash enough so I could raise it and get my fingers under it?

Thanks for any words of wisdom.

I had to remove the screws which are on the instrament cluster. This let me lift the dash top enough to get my fingers in. Still wasn't easy though.

Pull the 'waterfalls' loose, there is one scr at the top on each side which also holds the Dash and that may allow you more room. Did you remove the 2 screws under that top box when you took it out? So with what Mike said and this, it may help.

Forgot about that! Thanks for speaking up.

This is not an easy mod, a PITA, but well worth it!

I removed two screws in the box, and took it completely out. Inside that opening, on the windshield side, I saw one screw you could take out with a nut driver, but don't remember any other screws.

GDZHHR-are those screws at the top of the Instrument Cluster?

Do the "waterfalls" just pop up if you use a screwdriver? Or is there someway else to get them out?

Thanks for all your responses.

Yes just the ones at the top.

Here's a how-to on the waterfall......sorry the pics in that thread are no longer there. Just take a thin screw driving under the top corner of the waterfall and pry it out a little, grab and pull. You may have to disconnet a few switches to have enough clearance for the top srews underneath.

the waterfalls just pulls out. Only clips holding it. Grab though the two top round air outlets (DO NOT GRAB THE MESH AREA) and pull.

I made a chevy emblem out of 1/4" aluminum plate 4"x2" approx. center drilled it and counter sunk hole then installed viewer. Used 3M red tape and centered it in front of insterment dome on the flat part of dash. No more stiff neck.

Sorry to dredge up an old discussion...been away from the site for a bit.

Finished the install and thought I'd pass along a few tips.

1) After taking out the waterfall, taking out the glove box and removing the screws discussed above, if you lift up the dash (carefully) with a small screwdriver around the "tabs" at both ends of the dash and lift the dash up towards the center, you'll gain a little extra clearance.

2) As in NASCAR, I glued the washer (I used just plain old Elmers), locking washer, and nut together before I attempted to screw them to the prism base. This step really helped. I even added a slightly larger flat washer to the mix. Stick a drill bit through the middle (and if you're in a hurry) a hair dryer will solidify the glue.

Again, sorry to resurrect the discussion, but I thought these might help folks.
