Well I think you're running into a "backwards compatibility" issue, there are some differences between the door panel assemblies, like the master switch assembly in the 2010 doors. With the change from dash mounted window switches to door mounted in 2009, it looks like some changes were made internally in the doors.

Here's the 2010 door...

And here's the 2008 door....

Looks like they are taking the parts out of a 10 and putting them in an 08.
Good luck with your retrofit!

Talking 2010 into 2008 swap

The 2010 was totaled , My 2008 inside looks like the people before me grew
peanuts in it, Yes that DARN BAD. With coffee stains all over the place even the head liner.
So with the black interior, WOW what a swap.
So i started the swap, carpet, headliner, seats, panels as much as i could.
Swaped out the door latches, window motors. shifter also
Door panels pitb so i will just paint the old ones.
Put in the 2010 raido went to my old dealer, They couldn't program the raido.
Bcm didn't see the up dated raido, So i cleaned the old raido and reinstalled it.

How hard was it to remove/change that upper dash pad? I am planning to remove the brown upper dash pad and replace with black...thinking it will look WAY better with my cashmere interior.

Not that hard at all. Just remember were you'r screws go after words.
But the 2010 hhr was close by so i didn't have to remember LOL
You must remove the "A" pillier tho for them screws under them
The dash is plastic, So pulling and yanking might break it.
Just don't yank the dash out because of the sensor in the middle of dash.
Pass. air bag, The bolts under and behind the glove box.
REMEMBER to disconect the batt. Before playing with the air bag.
