Question ABS traction control light come on and off

I just got a 2010 HHR LS from a friend and the ABS traction control comes on and goes off. I was wondering what I can do to fix this. Also it makes a growling noise when driving. I smell something burning that I smell before with another car that I had and it turned out that I needed a new cv axle. Also the breather hose going to the air filter is damaged. Any suggestions on how to correct these things? My friend told me this is a good car, but I'm finding things that are wrong with it. I need to get this car to pass MARYLAND STATE INSPECTION SOON? Anything I can do myself to get this to pass inspection myself?

Since you didn't even get the codes I'm wondering if you can fix anything on it. You don't tell us what kind of tools you have. Do you have a scan tool? A DVOM?
What do you know?
I have a feeling there's other problems.
Test your friendship and ask for your money back.

ABS light can be sticking brake calipers or pads. Damaged front hubs , very common.

I have a scan tool, but it doesn't give codes for ABS. I was wondering if bad wheel bearings would cause this or if a bad cv axle would cause it also.

You really don’t need to scan for ABS codes. Just inspect

GROWLING NOISE WHEN DRIVING!! Did anyone see that? Hus are trashed.
Strange smell might be a cracked flex pipe.
