No, the battery is integral.
If you can take the tire off the rim and then reseat it then balance it, you can do it yourself. There are supposed torque specs for the screw.
The only way they could damage it is to actually get inside the tire and monkey with it, or use a scan tool incorrectly (not a simple TPMS reset tool).

It was at a firestone. Very nice places, even in the bad parts of towns. I wouldn't doubt they had one of the best ones available, just to do stuff like this.

TechII. Or, the too expensive kind for the shop to have laying around for tire jockeys to break. A real mechanic might pay $300-$500 for the kind that reads the ID of the sensor and inserts it into the RCDLR at the correct location.
