The problems occurred during the late 2010 model year, and the 2011, when GM started the Dexos program. Several of the 2011 engines made their way into the late build 2010's(so I've been told) , and many people developed oil consumption issues. I had several people who owned those vehicles go back to the dealers, and those issues were solved by engine replacement. If anyone owns a late 2010 build vehicle with a 2.4 ltr engine, I would go to the dealer, and see if this might be the case with yours. My mother had one such Equinox, but we staved off the damage by running Valvoline Max Life Full Synthetic from day one, I also replaced her oil cap with a Dexos cap . So no one would put conventional oil in by mistake.

Reading through it I learned that the 2.4l engine used in The Equinox is not The same one used in the HHR.
