2006 hhr problems

Long story short

car was showing check charging system so I put a meter on it with car running. The voltage was bouncing up and down. I installed alternator and voltage was steady at 14 volts. I called it fixed lol

girlfriend drives it the next day and says the power steering was going in and out. I drive it the next day to work to see what’s going on. In the 15 minute drive it went out on me twice andi thought I see the radio lights dim for a split second. As I pull in to park the battery light comes on. Later that day I put meter back on and get 14 volts. I drive it home after work steering goes out a couple times and battery light comes on and goes out a couple times. She needs to get to her moms the next day and drives it. After a while of driving and mentioned above problems happening the check charging system comes on and a little bit later dash lights and gages goes crazy. The door locks start locking and unlocking, radio shutting off and coming on. As she pulled into her moms it dies and battery is dead, just clicks when she tried to start. Hey brother put a new battery on it but it was still doing the first symptoms ( power steering and battery light). I have a power steering motor I haven’t installed yet Because of all the other stuff that is happening also

You may have a bad alternator. Or a bad serpentine belt tensioner. Or a bad battery. Or a broken battery terminal clamp. Or a loose or dirty connection anywhere between the battery and the alternator.

I don't think it is the power steering motor; but do you know about the extended warranty on it (free dealer fix).

Seems to be a loose wire. Check the large red wire connection on the under hood fuse box (comes directly from the battery and goes directly to the starter/alternator). Then check the smaller connection (that is the power steering lead).

Has anybody been doing any work under the hood or near the battery just before this started?

This terminal might be loose as Donbrew says

Not that one, that's the power steering terminal!

The other wire, Riggs! Under the red cover!

RJ in here Donbrew refers to the electric power steering terminal, I posted a photo of one!

The picture shows BOTH that I was referring to. The confusing bit is they are both red.

I had an issue like this recently. Changed the alternator 3 times. It kept testing as “bad” turns out it was a broken terminal on the starter causing the issues. Changed the starter and resolved all issues.
