For severe duty the manual says change auto trans fluid and filter at 50,000 mile intervals.... (50,000/100,000/150,000) non severe duty never needs changed (I doubt that but I just checked the manual and so it states)

At 90,000 you may want to have that done just for safety sake..... I never liked old tranny fluid personally. Also have you checked motor/tranny mounts? If you can feel it through the floor boards maybe the assembly is rocking around......

I'm only at 24,000 and I wish mine shifted a little harder myself, but not like that.

If you can, check the wiring harness that runs across the top of the transmission. A friend of mine has an '07 that was doing the same thing and there was a harness lying on top of it and had rubbed some wires to the bare metal

I was thinking the shift solenoid as well...

My fiance's HHR is doing the exact same thing... engine light comes on for awhile then goes out... Hard shift between 1st and 2nd. She has an automatic as well with close to 80,000 miles.

She ran it by AutoZone for a free engine light check and the error report said it was the shift solenoid. Not the transmission.

Going to get it replaced soon...

update: Well i did get a check engine light on what happen after my wife got a oil change they left the air hose off the air box that holds the air filter which Threw a code po 171 running lean so i guess this will also throw your trans shift off too trying to adjust, well anyway i put the hose back in and made sure it tight and then pulled the neg cable off the battery for 30 min to reset the computer, all is good for two days now trans shift great and no cel either ..so this will solve the problem ...
