Looking over the Service Manual and can’t seem to find anywhere to tap into a 5VDC source. Anybody know of any? The only mention of 5VDC is from the ECM and those are “Reference Voltages” for sensors through out the vehicle.

The propose is to charge a rarely used Cell Phone stored in the dash bin. So rarely used I fear it will have lost its charge when I need it.

I could put in a power supply off the 12VDC, but would prefer not to. Don't want to use a CLA either, so any power I install will be hidden.

 

Why would you not tap it off the 12v. If you are using a car charger or the parts of a car charger to build you rig then the 12v source should be fine

 

If there are any 5VDC sources, they will probably be very low current for use with sensors and the ECM (as you have already found out). I wouldn't want to hook anything up to the 5V for fear of damaging or disrupting ECM operations.

The Cell Phone DC port takes 5 volts, very little current I suspect. As soon as I pick up a cord with the very small connector on it I will hook it up to a 5VDC source and measure the current. I like to do things as simply as possible with as few devices to fail or get unplugged or whatnot. So I am trying to find a way to do it with just an in-line fuse hooked up to some preexisting 5VDC source within the vehicle. Like I said I haven't found one yet AND yes, I am cautious about using a source that is only meant for sensors.

I think your missing the point. The 5V available in a car is not there for random usage. Most of it is signal level power. I don't care how small your charging rate is you should not be using the ECU voltage to charge your phone. Put a 12V charger under your dash and run the wire out into where ever you want to charge your phone and have a safe system.

 

X2 I would think that a ECM is a lot of money for a charger.

 

I'm not anticipating using the ECM 5VDC. Only mentioning because that is the only source I have found thus far.

Yes, the MAP sensor and many other “sensitive” sensors use the 5VDC from the ECM.

 

The point is the only 5 volts is going to be signal voltages from things like the ECU / BCM etc. 5 volts is a control voltage. 12 volts is what the car runs on. There will be plenty of safe 12v taps available. There will be no safe 5 volt taps.

 

x2 don't make the car fit you needs adapt the phone charger it fit the car.
