Bad Chain?
Bunky,
Sorry for the bad luck. There is a website called "http://www.car-part.com/" , this is like the google of junkyards. Those engines can be found in the $600 range for something with 100K miles on them. If you go the used route, I would, be sure to change the timing chain, balance chain and water pump before installing.
GreyBeard, that is funny!!

Chain
Thanks again for the responses the chain did not break it was still on just very loose, the engine was idling when it went, we have pulled the head and after cleaning up the tops of the Pistons they appear to have very minor marks on them, were looking to have the head repaired or buying a remanufactured head, and doing the chain, gears and tensioner again.
Minor marks, or not, if the pistons hit the valves hard enough to do that kind of damage to the valvetrain I don't know if I would trust them. Tough call... I do understand wanting to save the engine, but I don't know.
Just my two cents...

Does the 2.2 have 2 chains?
The 2.0T does, and my (former) shop decided to replace only one. The resulting failure was similar, but ended up blowing a hole in the bottom through the oil pan. Chain jumped 2 teeth, 1 apparently is survivable, but 2 is contact.
I was doing 75 mph. It was like sending your pet through a wood chipper. I will never forget that sound. So wrong, but you have 2 lanes to cross...

I found this Youtube of a teardown of a valve-crashed Ecotec. Morbidly interesting. Lifters look just like the pics in #4.
This thread seemed like a fitting home for the link, but maybe the mods know a better place.
it’s a later motor, a 2.4 LEA from a 2012 Equinox or something, but it will look very familiar, as it’s basically a direct-injection version of the LE9 used in 2009-11 2.4L HHR’s.
