Battery saver mode on/check charging system
While driving tonight the following two messages began cycling on the ECM
BATTERY SAVE MODE ON followed by CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM.
I immediately turned back for home and approximately half a block from the house the messages quit coming across the ECM. Any ideas what's going on? Car has approximately 122,000 miles well kept since I became owner at 75,000 miles. The other thing I noticed is when I turned on the fan control when I started the car it only works on high. Thanks for any help.

Best to do as the message said and have the system checked. Most auto parts store can check the charging system for you.
Could be anything from a bad alternator, fuse or loose wiring. Not really one that can be diagnosed via the internet.
Fan only working on high. Bad fan resistor. Common problem on the 2006's. Usually caused by a leaking butyl patch allowing water to leak into the passenger side cabin area. Shorts out the fan resistor.
Several threads regarding this. If you want more info or just to read up on it, try the Search function for related threads.

BTW, the display on the dashboard is the DIC (Driver Information Center), the ECM is the Engine Control Module under the hood (the computer).
A 2006 probably is due for a battery. A dead battery will make the alternator malfunction.

I'd say alternator and then you need to do the buty patch repair.( I drive an early 2006 HHR )
I did both after 100k miles. Our Batteries are in a GREAT location & that is why they last longer then most car with the battery in the engine compartment.
