I'd see if Chevy will goodwill it since it's a known issue, but good luck getting parts. They're backordered, at least around here. Dealer's been waiting for over 2 weeks and still doesn't know when it will be in.

 

Mine has done it once is COLD single digit weather.

 

I have a 2006 HHR LT 2.4 5 speed (Front disk, rear drum) with 72,000 miles on it. We are in sub zero and single digit weather here right now, and this problem seems to have started when it got this cold.

Has anyone figured out if this is a recall on a defective sensor, or should I be taking my brakes apart and inspecting them for need of replacement?

 

Hrm, coldest it got here was like mid 20's and no brake problem.
I doubt they will recall it as too many unknowns. Im at 80k and never had a brake fluid problem.

On a side note, have you flushed out ur fluid every 30k like ur supposed to?:)

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:


A customer may comment about a intermittent RED brake light coming on with a possible message on the Driver Information Center (DIC) displaying "low brake fluid". This condition is more likely to occur during cold weather and will be intermittent as the fluid is more viscous

Recommendation/Instructions:


Follow the diagnostics to check and make sure that the brake fluid is not low. If the brake fluid is NOT low then replace the brake Master Cylinder Brake Fluid Reservoir KIT (P/N below) as it has been modified to resolve this concern.

Automatic Transmission Should be MN5 Auto Transmission Master Cylinder Brake Fluid Reservoir KIT Part # 15939572

Manual Transmission Should be M86 5-Sp Manual Transmission Master Cylinder Brake Fluid Reservoir KIT Part # 15939485

 

I have also had a brake fluid message appear for a few seconds on a cold morning startup. Never had it checked out but have never had any other brake issues. 2006 hhr/lt. 204,000km.

 

I see this thread started several years ago. I've always liked the HHR and finally got an 07 LT2 a few weeks ago. I wanted both ABS and Traction Control, after having driven a Buick Rendezvous with ABS and AWD for several years. I did my research .... and found the ABS is the only way to go on these vehicles. The front disc/rear drum assembly is a repair nightmare with Chevy issuing many service bulletins about them. For me, it was worth it to pay a bit more for a more dependable braking system. Yes, I'm well aware of the GM issues on their ABS, too .... which is why I sold the Buick instead of investing too many bucks for braking and AWD repairs.

I am going thur the same thing on 2007 ls when it cold out the light goes on and then off while driving...My fluid level is about half way were too top and bottom meet in the middle so assume it is low and never been touched in 6 years .. the breaks have been done last year and i see no leaks ,weird ..So my question should i add some? I have read in the owners manual not too.. any thoughts...

 

I would fill the master cyl. Then just keep an eye on the level for awhile.
