Budster-Power Steering Issue
Budster-Power Steering Issue
On the way home I get a message 'Power Steering' and sure enough it quit @ 70mph on the highway. I continued home (40 miles) and it (PS) never came back. Found some information here saying that my 2006 now has a 'Lifetime warranty' on the PS. Anyone taken advantage of this yet? Is there documentation on this that I can take to my dealer? HHR has 64+k miles on it *sigh*
Thanks for any information on this.

To anyone who has this repair done on a 2006 under the extended warranty please send me the information you used to get it done.
Thanks to all.
Jerry ~ not looking forward to paying for this, although the steering isn't much harder than my 1956 Continental Mark II ~ lol ~
I've got a letter it is VIN specific and from GM Canada, where I'm at up here in the great white north.
Today not much , I installed a set of LED lights like Britjoe posted awhile ago, the rears are great no hyper flashing , but the fronts hyper flash , so I left the stock 3057's in.
It was nice to work on a project again, even if I did have to get my next door buddy to do the front bulbs!

We have an 09 and a 10 and both of our cars were recalled by GM for the power steering motor replacement. Check under the recall section on the forum, there is info on the recall listed on one of the posts. Then I would contact GM directly.

Your cars were specifically covered on the recall. The 2006, 2007 and I believe early 2008's were SUPPOSED to be covered under an extended warranty....which is all covered in the thread that you referenced.
Your turn donbrew....

well after 1 1/2 hours on the phone with two local dealers who have no knowledge of the extended warranty I was referred to GM 800-222-1020 and spoke with 'Victoria' who looked up my vin and told me that there is NO extended warranty for the power steering but she has contacted my local dealer to get me a quote for the repair.

I still want to find out about this 'extended warranty' because the PS may go out for good.......... Where else can I search since GM told me there was no 'extended warranty'.
I split these posts off into a seperate thread to keep them from getting lost in the "What Did...." thread.
The power steering motors do have overheat protection that kicks in when they reach a temperature that would cause permanent damage to them.
We had a member a few years ago who was "dry steering" his HHR trying to diagnose a front end noise, he ended up tripping the P/S motor's overheating protection. After it cooled off, the steering motor functioned properly again, and the "Power Steering" message cleared from his DIC.
Dry steering, for the non-gray haired crowd, is when you turn the wheel from lock to lock on a stopped vehicle, it puts a tremendous amount of strain on the steering gear.
A 114 degree day shouldn't affect the steering motor, it's in the cabin enjoying the A/C right along with you.
It's sounding like a P/S motor starting to fail, they seem to become intermittent before they poop out completely.

I just spent 10 minutes scanning through https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/gm-r...tension-50057/ And found this GM bulletin number for you: GM Bulletin 14119 for HHR model year(s) 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 HHR (non-turbo).
Try giving it a read, there are several links to official documents.

I read through the whole EPS thread and now that I have the GM Bulletin 14119 printed out I will contact my local dealer.
Big thanks to Mike and Don for the help, really appreciated
