Thumbs down A/C On and Off???

I was recently in a front end accident and my grille and A/C condensor were damaged. I have since replaced both, but my A/C has been giving me problems. We put in the oil and refrigerant to make it work again. All was fine until it reached 100+ degrees here in South Texas. It works fine any time the temperature is below 100, but once it hits that, the A/C quits working and I get a bit of a studder at idle. Is there a sensor I need to replace??? I'm thinkng the IAT sensor, but not sure...................

Sounds like you may have overcharged with freon and head pressure is exceeding the limit at high ambient temperatures. This will put a big load on engine when AC compressor kicks in and then shut down the compressor when high pressure limit is exceeded.

O.K., but how do I fix it??? We put one can and then opened another just to get it at the required psi. Do I go and turn on the a/c when it's 100+ and release some out till it starts working or what????????

When there is an abrupt loss of refridgerant (collision) you should add 2.0 ounces of PAG oil and .9 lb of freon. Too much oil or freon is not a good thing and will damage the compressor and or cause cooling problems.

Take it to a shop and have the freon removed and then recharged to the proper level of freon.

I don't remember what the measurements were, but that's what we used........

You sure your not just icing up the system. Are you running it long term in recirculate mode?? Run it in recirculate until the car is cool and shift it to fresh air and see if it makes a difference. I've seen 134 systems ice up easier than the older R12 systems.

It doesn't make a difference. See, the temp outside today was 80+ and it worked all day. I've ran all settings on different days to see if it goes out on me on a cool to mild day, and it works fine. Once it's over 100+ it fails to work. It will work in the morning, noon, then once the temp outside gets to it's peek 2ish-6 PM it won't work. Once the temp goes down, well, what do you know, it starts working again.................
