Mine, if its cool outside will run at or just above 180. The thermostates in the HHR's are 180 degree stats, and the Stants available online are specd at 180.

Can anyone ABSOLUTELY specify what the thermostat opening temperature spec is? I've heard 180, 185, 190, 195 on this forum. And NOT what the Stant or aftermarket catalogs indicate....which have been incorrect in some circumstances.

ChevyMgr or anyone with a Service Manual.....843???????

Thanks, in advance

Thanks Michelle. I'm keeping an eye on it right now. I am getting due for service, so will have them look into while I'm there. If I don't get it done this weekend, it will surely be next weekend.

OK Snoopy, ask and ye shall receive.

Per the service manuals from 2006-2011 the thermostat specified for the HHR regardless of engine size(2.2/2.4/2.0)is 180ºF/82ºC.

Opening temperature is allowed a variance of up to 22ºF/11ºC.

Closing temperature is allowed a variance of up to 10ºF/6ºC.

If the opening or closing temperatures of the thermostat tested in a coolant mixture equivalent to that specified for use in the vehicle exceeds the above values, the thermostat should be replaced.

Thanks 843'.....

Regardless what other people say about you, I think you are a gentleman and a scholar.

Kidding aside (you ARE a gentleman and a scholar), I think the info you posted will help some people. And it does clear some confusion on my part.

Blackscreamingmachine................

If you made the determination of a new thermostat by viewing a temperature of 219 on your DIC, you may be using fuzzy logic.

Many other issues can lead to that reading AND many of them just indicate a normal situation.

Gee Snoopy, watch the compliments, my wife says my head is too big now.

But honestly, thanks...I just try to help out when I can, and repay the knowledge base here for what I've learned and the mistakes its helped me to avoid.

The function of the thermostat is to keep the engine HOT enough, not to keep it COOL!!!!!! The radiator/water pump/journals/coolant (circulatory system) keeps it cool. When the coolant reaches 180 F.ish it opens and stays open until it cools back down to under 180 F.ish.
