Car won't start, has power..more inside

About a month ago I had check charging system pop up on my car (and engages Battery Saver Mode). I take it home, turn it off, give it a few minutes to start, no luck. I check battery, and it was dead. I take the Battery to go get checked at Oreilys. They said the battery is still good, and fully charge it. I take it back home, connect it and it works.

Now a month later, fiancee says having issues with it starting, a delayed starting. She brings it home today, I go out and notice the delay in starting. I pop the hood and ask her to start it again, then it wouldn't start. Power comes on, but no clicks, won't turn over.

I check the Battery, put a meter on it and it reads 12.36, I go to the fuse box inside and check it there, it reads 12.45.

Went through the forums checking everything I could myself. Haven't been able to get a jump yet, will have to do that in the morning. Has anyone had any similar issues? The threads I read of similar issues never had any resolutions. Could it be the starter? I hear no click at first, until I turn off the car, ill hear a click come from near fuse box.

I checked all the relays, some were not seated properly, popped them back down. Still no start.

I want to try to diagnose this myself before having a mechanic check it out.

Thank you for your time on this

Posting the year, model, engine, mileage, etc. would be helpful.

12.36 volts is low. A full charge should be around 12.8 or better. How did you check the battery ? Still hooked up in the car , or did you disconnect the cables and take a static reading at the battery itself ?
Since you had the check charging message pop up, I would say that needs to be addressed 1st after you get it started. From your post info, it appears all you have done is check the battery.

It could be the alternator, once you get it started drive back to that parts palace and have them test it. In the mean time check your ground wires in the battery area and under the hood at the transmission just down to the right of the oil filter housing and on the driver's side on the rad cradle below the hood bumper on the engine side

I checked it while attached to the car, and checked it disconnected with my meter. Came up same reading.

The charging system message came up a month ago, so took the battery in they charged it to check to see if was bad, it was good. I didn't check the alternator though, shouldve had them check it also. It drove fine for a month till yesterday she started having delayed startups, then it wouldn't start at all.

I will do this, is there any other ground connection I should check? I followed this post on the ground connection under hood, is this what you mean https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/prob...p-50543/page2/

If so I checked that, no corrosion, not loose, or burnt.

My girl said she's been smelling burnt electronics recently from Drivers side after she stopped and turned off car.

Mechanic came by tested starter said its 100% the starter. Gonna have him change it out. See what happens. Didnt notice any corrosion on the battery or ground connections. Could the burn smell come from the starter?

Will let know tomorrow when they change it what the outcome is.

Just out of curiosity, how'd he check the starter?

Could be a starter smell. Still sounds like a ground issue if the new starter doesn't help. There are 2 or 3 large grounds buried behind the charge piping attached to the trans (or close) they are near the round plug on the front of the trans. This is where the fuse box is grounded, or at least mine was. I just had the whole wiring harness out a week ago, I will try and shove my Note 3 (lol, huge phone) in there and get a pic of them.

But hopefully you've got it fixed!

Problem fixed it seems, changed out starter had it tested. Tried to click on tester, nothing more after that. Mechanic put in new starter, checked all the grounds no corrosion or burnt wires that could be seen. Ran it for over 15 min no issues. Im still going to do a load test on i check the alternator. Says is running fine, but the charge system warning from month ago still has me worried. Thanks for the help guys!

Good to know. I got a shot of where my ecm ground is located. Near the oil cooler. On a stud on the trans mount. Hopefully you won't need it but it's hidden and always good to check!

The ill starter could have caused the root problem for the charging warning, have the electrical system checked for charging at the battery, my parts palace does this N/C !
