Chain Tensioner
#21
This is the new style tensioner, it does not adjust the timing chain, it applies tension to the chain guide
As I said in post #2, it's easy to change but check first you might already have the new style on your engine.

Chain Tensioner
I have asked several about this subject, and I think information has been out of order:
1. 2010 HHR SS 5spd.
2. Less than 25,000 miles
3. Cold (Cool) Air Package
Lets start here:
1. Do I have the new style tensioner?
2. Would the Cold (Cool) Air Package add to this?
3. Can I check any of the Tensioner parts, while I am doing the check?
4. Could there be any other problems which could cause the noise at warm up?
Thanks,
mblandsr "Mike"

Noise at warm up would be loose chain or worn timing chain guides.
You'll have to look at the head of the timing chain tensioner to confirm which one you have , I included a link to view the new style with the hump !

My 2010 SS has the new style tensioner. Your's probably does too. Just get a flashlight and go look. It is visible from above, right behind the shock tower area.
Heck. Mine sticks out like a sore thumb. It's the only part back there that is completely rust covered ! The new style "bump" is easy to see. Didn't even need to reach down and feel for it.

I don't really know what you're stating here.

Really no need to rehash this since you've ask this same question before. Just go back and read the other thread you started and the suggestions that were given.
You never returned to update on what you did back then so it's a little hard to give any new/different advice.

Here’s your question again 2 years later, from the thread Don closed so, is the noise back or was it never addressed?

The "old style" tensioner was only used in non-VVT engines. As far as I can tell All VVT engines have the "new" style.
Replacing the tensioner is mostly a hopeful repair for the symptom. It really means the entire timing set is wearing out (the tensioner is part of the set).
