Check Engine Light

Greetings,
Or should I say Help!
Today I replaced my Fuel Tank Vent Solenoid(FTVS), The cost for it was $43.00 at the dealership parts store. This did not estinguish my Check Engine Light(CEL) and needless to say I am disapointed. I am 64 and not working. I regret loosing the money because of a tight budget. We have manditory safety inspections in Louisiana. I was rejected an issued a temporary rejection sticker which will expire in a week or so. The inspection revealed a P0496 code along with the CEL, so consequently I changed the FTVS, p/n 012597567, described as a valve119G to no avail.
Will someone with some expert advice please advise me on logical troubleshooting. I donot think dealers take returns on parts such as this.

It's possible you need to either disconnect the battery for 30 minutes, or cycle it ( start/drive/shut off) several times for the CEL to go away. Some repairs are this way. Have you cleared the code with a scanner? (Parts store may or may not do this, they used to, but some won't clear a code anymore)

Hhr p0496

Thanks for the Info GREYBEARD999. I have one of those Grey Beards also. It is a little late in the evening to try your suggestions, however I will be back on my repair attempt in the AM for sure. I did pass the AZ parts store today and had them clear my CEL. The AZ parts store scanned my HHR and informed me that I have a P0102, P0113, as well as the P0496 "The plot thickens"! I will try the battery manuver or what you called "cycling the power" in the AM as you suggested GB999. I have until 6/26/2011 to rectify my problem and be reinspected. I should have not had the AZ parts store to clear the CEL, now I will need to drive to the AZ parts store to rescan after recycling the power. Do you know if they will be able to rescan sucessfully after having cleared the codes? I herd the AZ store person make some kind of remark of that nature. Well, I will keep you and others that may be tuned in , up to date on my progress. Thanks again, JT

Once cleared the codes are gone.... unless a problem isn't fixed and a code is stored again.
