Chip key workaround

So you only got 1 key and the dealer wants upwards of $60 to $100 for a spare key..

Here is the workaround should you feel so EMPOWERED. Go to Home Depot have them cut you a couple plain all metal / brass car keys. I believe its key #28 on their key kiosk..
Take the one chip key you have and you can do a couple things -
1) using an xacto knife you can cut the transponder out and hot glue it close by the ignition.
2) hot glue and hide the entire key behind steering column plastic close by the ignition.

The idea is to always have the transponder close to the ignition so you can use plain old car keys..

You can test this easily by having a plain key made and holding your chip key closeby.. It will start the car..

Or, get a chipped blank from eBay 2/<$10. Or, any locksmith. You don't have to pay GM prices.
Just be sure it has the circle plus icon on it.

X2 for Donbrew's idea, without the chip, its harder to Hotwire and steal the car!

Plain metal keys at Home Depot are $1.97 and not everyone has credit cards or bank accounts enabling them to facilitate an Ebay transaction..

K go to a locksmith then or ask a friend who has Ebay to buy it for you(I do this all the time for people who aren't tech savvy). Is it worth making your vehicle way easier to steal by bypassing a major security feature to save a few dollars?

I only got a single key from the previous owner but when I checked this site
https://my.chevrolet.com/home, there was a recall and I got two new keys.
The car's an '09 LS.

But if the recall was already done, you'd still only have one chip key.

It's just worth a look for new owners of old HHRs. If they only have one key, that is.
Got a new Ign sw, too. And a PS motor. Like Christmas in July
