Yes, the images ChevyMgr put up are what the dealer is talking about replacing.


I can only imagine there are some oil journals that somehow make the camshaft to timing chain gear connection changeable. I've read the description, but still do not fully understand the operation.

What I would like to learn is just how this is accomplished in a movable drawing much like this one from ARB:

Showing an air locker working.

Note: The above moving image has nothing to do with this subject - it is only an example of a good learning tool.

I may have to wait to see the actual part once it is removed from the engine to learn just how it operates.

I never followed up on this thread and said how my problem was solved.

The dealer wanted to tear my engine apart and do a bunch of work I wasn’t comfortable with. After an excessively long wait for the dealer to get the parts in I purchased the solenoid/actuator from another dealer and installed it. Not a lick of any problem since and it has been ~6,000 miles ago.

Oh, I tested the old solenoid/actuator and the coil became open over a period of time – so this might be the failure mode GM is having with these units.

Open = infinity resistance to the coil. The FSM states the new coil resistance should be 8 –12 ohms.

Cool deal. Glad you got it fixed. Too bad the dealer got sidetracked and tried to make it more complicated than it really was.

ChevyMgr - that was a great posting on how the system works. Thanks for posting that.

I'm getting intermittent CEL, rattling sounds, some sputtering on start up, and P0010. Into the dealer tomorrow under the 5/100K power train warranty. Thanks for the great threads; I can return the 02 sensor I thought was the CEL problem.

My update: Took it into the dealer today (Gentillini in Woodbine, NJ) with the P0010 code; CEL wasn't on, but it was sputtering a little this morning. They changed the intake solenoid under the 5yr/100K warranty and all is well again.

Off topic but...
I've always been very pleased with this dealer. I went to them and a local Chevy dealer when I was looking to buy. The local dealer strung me along for two weeks saying they were setting up a dealer trade. I finally asked for my $500 check back. Gentillini called that afternoon and said they had a white one just coming off the truck. They wouldn't even take a deposit. Salesman said "A handshake's enough."
