@ chichi........... Not sure why the dealer would be throwing parts at it instead of finding the problem. With that many parts replaced they should start looking for something else as the cause.......

I finally got my urethane sway bar bushings installed, and clunking is gone, feels like new again! No more clunks.

2008 HHR LT clunking

I have read all the post about the clunking. My 2008 HHR LT has 54230 miles now. We bought it when it had 25000 miles and we only had it for about a month when the clunking noise started. I took it back to the dealer they replaced the steering column noise went away until 52000 miles. We are of course no longer under warranty the dealer said they would replace the column again if I would pay the labor.

We will try replacing the sway bar link and bushings before going back to the dealer. My car is never off the hard top or concrete roads.

Will update the progress.

2008 HHR LT, chrome package, leather, 25 mpg city, 32 mpg hwy.

Well we replaced our sway bar links today. And that took all the noise out of my car. I would recommend anyone having the clunking in their HHR to change out the sway bar links. The ones that MOOG #K750012 make have the greasable joints much better than the factory set up. Bought the parts at Federated Auto parts both for $75 and that included VA tax.

Thank you to all those that made this topic for others to have help after the dealer gives up or you are out of warranty like me.

Thank you

well....in spite of not having any "clunking", decided anyway to go ahead and replace the sway bar links with what appears to be much better made MOOG K70012 pieces. ran into the problem where the ball turns while trying to release the nut(s).....but, found that there there are actually small 17mm flats on the backside that keep the ball from turning. used a 17mm open end......worked great. only thing is that the 17mm hex on the ball has rounded corners so the open end's gotta fit tightly........

thanks for the information on this. This has been a sense of frustration for me over the last 10-12 months. I'm going to buy these (if they are in stock) and install them this weekend.
