Clutch Pedal Bracket

Last week I noticed my clutch pedal bracket was sticking. It would return up half way, and then slowly make its way all the way back. The car (08 HHR SS) is only a year old with around 13K mi. I thought "wow, thats strange, I don't think it needs grease already?" After a day of sticky clutch I went to peak up behind the dash at the pedal assembly.

Low and behold the clutch pedal bracket was broken!! (2) of the welds on the left side had broken loose causing the bracket to flex from the pressure of the return spring. The whole assembly would move and tweak whenever the clutch was engaged. Not good. Of course this was on a Sunday, so I dropped the car/truck off at Harbor Chevrolet in Long Beach. I thought I should do this before the remainder of the welds break and possibly make it undriveable.

In for service:
Day 1: The dealer diagnosed the car and ordered a new bracket. Informed that the bracket would come in overnight. The dealer even offered a rental car which was unexpected. I declined as I have another car, and I didn't want to spend our tax dollars on a rental car. :)
Day 2: No bracket yet.
Day 3: Pedal Bracket arrives. GM redesigned the bracket, so the tech has to make some 'modifications' to get it to work. I never did find out what the modifications were, but everything looks clean and tidy up under there now.
Day 4: Tech was sick and still need to 'test drive' the car.
Day 5: Service was complete.

Everything works perfectly now and the HHR was returned clean. Thank you chevy for the good service.

I know this was posted a long time ago but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if "Mikey" ever found out what caused the bracket welds to break or had any additional problems after the "redisgned" bracket was installed.

Break the pedal bracket! .. I think if I try to do it on purpose, I did not succeed.

So far so good on my 2007. Since I'm well out of any warrantee, I hope not to have that, or any other problems.

Just bought my first HHR Used 2010 with 48k miles. My 5th day of ownership and both left welds on my clutch pedal bracket have broken. Just my luck.

Welcome to the site

I myself have not heard of many others having this problem.

I guess I should look at my 08 and see what it looks like

Hello there,

I apologize for this. Have you had the chance to take this into the dealership for repair? If you would like any assistance from us please send a DM with your VIN, contact information and a preferred dealership, and we would be happy to look further into this for you.
