Yes,my HHR is 09 with the VVT.This clatter started last fall and hasn't gotten any worse,just annoying.Kinda just started out of the blue ,probly around65,000 miles on car when it started.
Found some info on terrainforum.net that says it is the cmp actuater solenoids/cam phaser.
