If the coolant smell persists, the prudent thing to do would be to have the cooling system pressure tested. A leak in the overflow tubing is not that critical, but anywhere else demands attention sooner rather than later.

Changing the thermo out tommorrow putting some prestone and distilled water and topping off. Its leaking through the thermo housing and you hear the "waterfall" in the dash.

Did you check the spark plugs for dis-colorization first? You might be wasting $$$$. And Prestone? not OEM recommended.

Please do make sure you're going back to Dex-Cool no matter the supplier, mixing Dex and normal anti-freeze will make an expensive mess and damage the engine, radiator, heater core, etc.

All myths, working quite fine. Thanks for the insight.

Leaving dex cool in causes more issues then solves. There was some grit in the coolant just from draining.

I have owned countless GM's that all had dex cool in one form or another and some of it does mix with the prestone stuff but has never had any further issues.

Everyone needs to decide what they feel comfortable with and having exp situations with other GM cars eating intake manifolds and head gaskets. I'd rather take my chance and if at worse, re flush in the spring.

Grit in coolant? head gasket munching? I don't care what coolant you use, I just meant what I said "not OEM recommended".

I Still say, check your spark plugs for discoloration caused by steaming coolant in cylinder passing through the seals.

A matter of semantics. Prestone DOES make a Dexcool product (called Prestone DexCool) that is GM approved (use it all the time).
