Cruise control won't engage & won't manually downshift into "I"...

...also I can hear/feel a click/clunk in the auto shift lever when I apply the brake.

I'm guessing this is somehow tied into the brake light swith.

I tried a search but came up empty-handed. Any help would really be appreciated.

Check to see if your brake lights work?

Its normal to hear the noise from the shifter when applying the brake. Its a brake interlock solenoid, it prevents the shifter from moving out of park unless your foot is on the brake.
Now the I shift, not sure what you mean, the lever actually wont move into "I"?

OK...so the noise IS normal...(I've driven this car 40K miles & somehow NEVER noticed this until yesterday.)

I CAN manually put the shifter into "I"...but the tranny doesn't actually downshift into that next lower gear.....

The "I" range is actually the first 3 gears with no overdrive, so it wouldn't "downshift" unless you were in OD when you selected it....... even then unless you were off the gas and below a certain speed I don't think it would shift into "drive" (the next lowest gear)

Yes, there may not be a downshift everytime you put it in "I".
It does three things that I know of, it locks out the 4th gear, it raises the normal shift point to around 3500rpm, and it engages the torque converter to allow for engine braking.

A bad brake lamp switch will cause the cruise control to not work.

Why the heck is that? Just to make you check your bad tail light?

No, because the computer uses the signal of the brake light going on as the signal to disengage the cruise when it is on. A fault in that circult means the cruise won't disengage when you hit the brake, so the computer won't allow the cruise to engage. Amazing how software can increase safety over analog systems (the old ones usually had 2 switches at the brake pedal - one for stop lights, one for the cruise disengage).

I have the 3rd brake light coming on...both 3057s have been replaced, still no left or right brakes.

Also...the doors won't automatically lock/unlock as Park and Drive are engaged.
